• About

The mission of the Women’s Pre-Health Leadership Society is to provide a forum for young women to inspire and empower one another, while addressing the current healthcare and professional issues and concerns facing all women, and promoting the next generation of female physicians and scientists.

  • The WPHLS is the first ever honor society on campus that exclusively recognizes and celebrates the achievements of young women pursuing the pre-health sciences. Our society consists of female undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence, commitment to community service, and a passion for pre-health studies.

  • Founding

WPHLS was founded in 2008 by Johns Hopkins University alumna Neha Desphande and former pre-medical advisor Kristen Kirby. It was modeled as a pre-medical chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association to serve as a campus organization dedicated towards advancing women in medicine as well as women’s health in the greater Baltimore community.

In 2011, WPHLS joined forces with Alpha Epsilon Delta, the Post-Baccalaureate Program, and the Pre-Professional Advising Office to start a medically related lecture series on campus: Conversations in Medicine Symposium. The series invites world renowned health care professionals to participate in a medically focused lecture series at Johns Hopkins University. The series initiates a dialogue among students, the community, and healthcare professionals about the realities of medicine in a global context.

WPHLS provides a platform for female undergraduates to exchange ideas and experiences, mentor one another, and receive guidance through the medical school preparation process. Members receive mentorship from current pre-health students, medical students of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the pre-professional office. Members also participate in community service projects and attend social events to facilitate networking with respected health care professionals.

  • Our Organization’s Structure

  • Executive Board

Executive board members include two co-presidents, secretary, treasurer, and the co-chairs of each committee. The executive board is responsible for managing and ensuring the society’s prosperity by collaborating to direct the society’s affairs and upholding the interests of the mission.

    Programming Committee

The programming committee is responsible for planning programs for WPHLS members and, occasionally, the student body. Programs include the Conversations in Medicine Lecture Series and the annual Women’s Pre-Health Leadership Society Conference, during which WPHLS hosts speakers and panels to discuss issues pertaining to women in science.

    Community Engagement Committee

The community engagement committee organizes service opportunities related to women, health disparities, science, and health care. Current service projects include our mentoring program, Bringing Ladies and Science Together (BLAST), an interactive public health lecture series for Project PLASE homeless shelter members, and volunteering with adolescents with brain disorders at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

    Public Relations Committee

The public relations (PR) committee is responsible for the communication and advertising of events hosted by WPHLS. Specifically, PR committee members collaborate to evaluate strategies for achieving informed public understanding of the society’s mission, aims, and events. PR projects include the website and our various social networking platforms.

    Social Events

The social co-chairs are responsible for organizing networking events among WPHLS members. They maintain the society’s relationships with alumnae, medical students, advisors, and the pre-professional office by organizing events and socials.

    Member Expectations

Members are expected to complete the mandated community service hours and help with events to fulfill a basic membership requirement. Similarly, members are expected to contribute to one of the three committees and collaborate with committee members to further WPHLS’s mission.
